Greetings, and welcome to Flower Mart 2013!
In this our 74th Flower Mart,Washington, DC's premier annual festival of of fun and flowers, we will honor America the Beautiful - our outstanding country and its people. This Flower Mart promises to be spectacular display of flora, music, art, dance and song. The vibrancy of our culture will be celebrated on two stages. Performers, young and old, from school children to seasoned professionals will grace our stages to take the families and friends attending Flower Mart on a journey across this great country of ours and through US history - from deep southern bluegrass to reverent gospel music to barbershop quartets to jazz standards.
The USA Tent will feature presentations by Joe Luebke, Cathedral Director of Horticulture with a talk and tour about the Cathedral Gardens; the Park Rangers will be on hand on Saturday to give a talk aimed at children; and the Master Gardeners of Maryland will educate us on local and important gardens. The National Park Service (NPS) preserves unimpaired natural and cultural resources and values of the American national park system for the enjoyment and education of this generation and those to come.
The American Society of Photographers (ASP) has prepared a special exhibit featuring 'America the Beautiful' , a breathtakingly beautiful photo exhibit of the United States; photos, videos and information about our national parks and local gardens. The ASP is a society of professional photographic artists who aspire to maintain the highest level of excellence by adhering to ethical standards, stimulating creativity and continually refining technical competence.
We are so fortunate to have the ASP and NPS involved and contributing to our USA Tent allowing its visitors to truly appreciate how beautiful 'America the Beautiful' really is.
America's First Ladies have traditionally played an important part in Flower Mart by either opening the Mart as Honorary Chairs or by attending. In the past, eight First Ladies have participated: Barbara Bush, Bess Truman (she came six consecutive years), Edith Wilson, Mamie Eisenhower, Jackie Kennedy, Eleanor Roosevelt and Lady Bird Johnson. This year, Flower Mart is inviting all living former First Ladies as well as our present First Lady, Michelle Obama, to be an Honorary Chair. A special exhibit of "First Ladies and Flower Mart" is being prepared to be on display during both days of the Mart.
More information will be provided as we proceed to the Flower Mart, so please continue to check the Flower Mart website under the Flower Mart entertainment page.
As in past years, all proceeds benefit the gardens and grounds (all 59 acres) of Washington National Cathedral. Despite the devastating earthquake and subsequent crane damage to the Cathedral gardens and grounds that occurred in 2011, All Hallows Guild promises to make this a memorable Flower Mart for everyone and hopes that you will join us on Friday, May 3rd and Saturday, May 4th - Rain or Shine! Don't miss this one.
