Six More Weeks of Winter

February 9, 2021

winter continues – so it was proclaimed on Groundhog Day!

Our dedicated grounds crew know the meaning of this – they have the task of clearing roadways, sidewalks, and steps on the close to have them ready for schools to open the morning after a snow and ice storm. Last year there was a bare trace of snow and ice, but this year is payback. Thanks to our unsung staff for the work they do to keep the grounds safe for us — and here’s hoping before too long they can get back to their regular work of gardening, turf management, and keeping Olmsted Woods clear.

In the midst of the work, it’s nice to pause and admire the beauty of the close filtered through the quiet of a snowfall. Adrienne Schopf, Bishop’s Garden Horticulturist, took these photos during a recent storm, and our Guild photographers caught the aftermath.

WHO WE ARE

All Hallows Guild was founded in 1916 to provide for the care and beautification of the grounds of Washington National Cathedral. The Guild works closely with the horticultural staff to preserve this historic landscape and raises funds for renovation and renewal of the gardens.
